The Do's and Dont's of Streaming for Donations, According to a Kpop Fan

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

As many of you may have seen, many Youtubers are now using their platform to create videos in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Some are even live streaming for donations. One of the biggest influencers of our time, PewDiePie, held a live stream showing his support to the protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement, raising over $100,000. He showed how influencers can make an important difference if they use the platforms that they were gifted with for the betterment of society.

Looking at all of the "Stream to Donate'' videos on Youtube, I saw a lot of misinformation spread. This led me to create a do's and don'ts list of how to stream. As a Kpop fan, I think I am qualified to give streaming advice. This list will help maximize the profits made by these videos.

Do’s

Do use a VPN to change your location. Youtube has made it clear that certain countries have a higher CPM than others. This means that viewers from these countries require Youtube to pay the content creator more money, per ad. The countries with the highest CPM are

  1. Maldives

  2. Denmark

  3. Poland

  4. Pakistan

  5. Australia

  6. Guadeloupe

Do watch the full video without skipping. Skipping through will cause the video to be recommended to less people and CPM levels to lower, along with the presence of ads. Watch all ads all the way through, otherwise Adsense will not be counted.

Do search for the video manually. When looking for the videos, search for the specific video's name. For example, you would search “Stream to donate: donate with no money” for this video STREAM TO DONATE: DONATE WITH NO MONEY. This gives the video a better chance of being recommended to you and to others.

Do clear your cookies every now and then, not the sweet kind. If you are streaming on a laptop or computer, clearing your cookies helps "restart" your streaming. After your cookies are removed, the Youtube algorithm will see you as a "new person" or a "new user".

Do use a Youtube account to stream! When not using an account, not all of your views will be counted.

Don'ts

Do not create a playlist. Although it may be tempting to create a playlist to keep all these videos on repeat, it does a lot more harm than good. Playing a playlist of repeat does not count the views for the video. Essentially, if you watch the video 50 times, none of those views will count. This means that the creator will not get the adsense from your views.

Don’t forget to like and comment! It helps to share these videos to your friends as well. This is essential because it tells Youtube that the viewers are real people and not bots. This gives the video a higher CPM, maximizing profits.

Don’t forget to watch other types of videos in between. This also tells Youtube that you are not some sort of streaming bot!

Utilize the above tips and warnings to guide your streaming to allow for effective means of providing money without directly "donating"! Here the some videos you should watch to donate to anti-racism causes:
